It took a tragic shipwreck for Congress to approve a lighthouse at Absecon Beach, and on Jan. 15, 1857, the beacon was illuminated. Ownership of the sentinel was formally transferred to Atlantic City in 1946. Unable to maintain it, the City sold it to New Jersey State in 1966.
