Bodie Island, NC

A lighthouse was built at Bodie Island, North Carolina in 1848 but within 2 years, had deteriorated beyond repair. A new 80 foot tower was erected on sturdy piles but in 1861,Confederate soldiers blew it up to prevent Federal troops from using it for their purposes. In 1871, a new tower rose with materials left over from nearby Cape Hatteras. A black and white 156 ft tower with a double keepers cottage next to it. The keepers dwelling serves as a museum today.
